The Timer Is Not Advancing on My Bosch Dishwasher

Bosch dishwashers are water-saving, energy-efficient and exceptionally quiet kitchen appliances. Sturdy and dependable, Bosch dishwashers are normally trouble-free. With use and time, however, a malfunction can occur. If your Bosch dishwasher timer is not advancing, try these troubleshooting tips before incurring the cost of a service call.
  1. Safety First

    • Warning! Always disconnect your Bosch dishwasher from the power source before attempting troubleshooting or any do-it-yourself repairs. Disconnect the dishwasher plug from the electrical outlet or shut off the power at the breaker or fuse box.
Because you are working with an electrical appliance that retains water, wear rubber-soled shoes and rubber or safety gloves to avoid conducting electricity. Capacitors and other internal parts can store an electrical charge after the dishwasher has been unplugged. Be sure to handle all tools by their insulated ends and remember that metal surfaces or pipes conduct electricity. Don't continue, if you’re not sure you’ve shut off the power properly. You may need to call a qualified appliance repair technician to complete the repair.

    Float

    • Bosch dishwashers are equipped with an electrical switch located below the dishwasher floor. Connected to the switch, on the inside of the dishwasher, a small plastic cylinder floats upward as water fills the machine. If the switch is damaged or the plastic float is trapped or caught in the raised position, water cannot enter the appliance. If water cannot enter the dishwasher, the timer won't advance. If the float or float switch is defective, a replacement kit is available for purchase online from appliance parts websites that specialize in Bosch appliance parts or from a Bosch appliance dealer.

    Timer

    • If the timer on your Bosch dishwasher always hangs up at the same point in the cycle, the problem is likely to be a fault in the float or float switch rather than the timer. If the timer stops at random times or won't advance, however, the timer needs to be replaced.

    Fire Hazard Safety Recall

    • Bosch Home Appliance and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission have issued a voluntary recall of certain Bosch dishwashers manufactured between May 1999 and July 2005. Over 450,000 units are affected by the recall, as the dishwasher can present a fire hazard. Consumers are advised to call the Bosch Appliance Service hotline or contact their local Bosch appliance dealer to schedule a free repair.
