Go into the attic and remove the screws or clamp securing the dryer duct to the rooftop dryer vent pipe with a Phillips screwdriver. If you have a solid duct instead of a flex duct, disconnect the opposite end of the duct at this time and remove the duct completely.
Put the hammer, small pry bar and utility knife into the small bucket. Place an extension ladder on the side of the house near the dryer vent on the roof. Ask a friend to hold the ladder while you climb up to the roof with an 8-foot length of rope.
Hold one end of the rope while you drop the other end to the ground. Ask your helper to tie the end of the rope on the bucket handle. Pull the bucket with the tools up to the roof with the rope.
Score the roofing tar between the exposed flashing and roof shingles around the rooftop dryer rain cap with a utility knife. There should only be tar around the exposed portion of the flashing above the roof shingles.
Insert the flat pry bar between the flashing at the bottom and the roof shingles. Position the pry bar near the nails securing the flashing to the roof. Gently pry the flashing up with the pry bar to expose the nail head. Pull the nails out with the hammer.
Lift the roof shingles covering the flashing at the top and upper sides of the rooftop dryer rain cap duct. This reveals the nails that secure the upper end of the flashing to the roof. Slide the pry bar between the flashing and roof just as you did with the lower part of the flashing.
Pry the flashing up just enough to expose the nail heads. Remove the nails from the flashing. Lift the dryer rain cap duct out of the roof.
