How to Install a Dryer Heat Diverter

One way to cut down on heating costs in the cooler months is to use heat from your dryer exhaust if you have an electric dryer. Dryer diverters have a damper that allows you to direct the heated dryer exhaust into the house and to close the damper during the spring and summer. Installing a dryer heat diverter is much like installing the dryer exhaust duct.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Tape measure
  • Flexible aluminum dryer duct

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the dryer power cord from the outlet and pull your dryer forward so you have access to the exhaust duct. Use a with a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the clamp securing the dryer exhaust duct to the dryer exhaust port. Pull the dryer exhaust duct off the exhaust port.

Loosen the clamp securing the dryer exhaust duct to the back of the outdoor dryer vent pipe. Pull the dryer exhaust duct away from the outdoor vent pipe.

    • 3

Place the dryer heat diverter on the floor 12 inches from the outdoor dryer vent pipe. The front of the diverter must point toward the dryer with the handle on the side of the diverter pointing toward the outdoor vent.

    • 4

Measure from the back of the dryer to the side front of the diverter with a tape measure. Measure from the outdoor dryer vent pipe to the back of the diverter.

    • 5

Cut pieces of flexible aluminum dryer exhaust duct to the measurements with tin snips. Slip the clamps over each end of the rigid dryer duct.

    • 6

Slide the ends of the dryer duct over the dryer exhaust port and the collar on the front of the dryer heat diverter. Tighten the clamp screws to secure the dryer duct. Repeat for the dryer duct between the outdoor vent pipe and the back collar of the diverter.

Push the dryer back toward the wall without bending the flexible dryer duct. Plug the power cord into the outlet.
