How to Get Rid of Internal Cracks in Acrylic Furniture

Acrylic is a type of plastic that is durable and a perfect choice for furniture. Internal cracks in acrylic furniture can compromise the stability of the piece and can even cause the furniture to break in two. Cracks that occur just below the surface of the finish can often be repaired to prevent further damage. If the crack has gone all the way through the furniture, it probably can't be saved. If the crack appears to be a deep scratch it can usually be filled using a fiberglass repair kit.

Instructions

    • 1

Wet a sheet of fine-grit sandpaper. Rub the acrylic gently in a circular motion in the area of the cracks. Be sure to keep the sandpaper wet to prevent scratching the furniture. Continue rubbing until the cracks have disappeared.

    • 2

Apply fiberglass repair into deep cracks. Mix the filler and hardener in the repair kit together. Spread the compound over the crack with the applicator so that it is completely filled in. You can add a few drops of artist acrylic paint to the compound to match it to the color of your furniture.

Allow the repair to sit overnight to dry. Sand the area again with wet sandpaper to make the area smooth.

Apply one to two teaspoons of polishing compound to a soft cloth. Rub the polish into the repair in a circular motion until it begins to shine like the surrounding acrylic.
