How to Hook Up a Honeywell Thermostat to a Heat Pump

When installing a new Honeywell thermostat for your heat pump, it is necessary to purchase a model that is compatible with heat pumps. Then you'll have to remove the old thermostat. The disassembly process varies depending on the current thermostat. Most have a cover that pops off and a mounting plate. When you disconnect the wires from the current thermostat, label them with masking tape according to the terminal letter that they connect. Each terminal has a letter designation.

Instructions

    • 1

Install the new Honeywell thermostat mounting plate to the wall according to the directions that come with the unit. Feed the ends of the heat pump wires through the mounting plate before attaching the plate to the wall.

    • 2

Find the label on the wire and match the wire with the correct Honeywell thermostat terminal. For example, a wire that you marked as “C” from the old thermostat attaches to the “C” terminal on the new thermostat. Loosen the terminal screw with a flat-head screwdriver, and insert the end of the wire into the terminal hole. Tighten the screw to secure the wire.

    • 3

Check to see if you have wires labeled for “R” and “RC.” If you do, loosen the “R” and “RC” terminal screws on the Honeywell thermostat and remove the metal jumper.

    • 4

Wrap the “C” and “C1” wires individually with electrical tape, if you have both wires. If you only have a single “C” or “C1” wire attach it to the “C” terminal.

    • 5

Cut a 2-inch piece of spare electrical wire with wire strippers if you do not have an “E” or “Aux” wire or if you only have one of them. Strip 1/4 inch of insulation from each each end with the wire strippers. Insert one end into the “Aux” terminal and one end into the “E” terminal.

Pop on the cover and test the thermostat.
