How to Reinforce Deadbolts

A reinforced deadbolt adds security to the entry points of your home, making it more difficult for a burglar to breach the lock. A deadbolt is more secure than a basic lock, but without the proper reinforcement the door can be kicked in. A grading system is used to indicate the durability of a deadbolt. Other factors include the strike plate and the screws used to hold the strike plate in place. Make upgrades to your existing deadbolt or replace it completely for security.

Instructions

    • 1

Install a new deadbolt if your existing lock has never been replaced or is weak. Choose a Grade 1 or Grade 2 deadbolt for the highest security.

    • 2

Tighten all of the screws on the deadbolt if you are keeping your old lock.

    • 3

Replace the existing strike plate with a heavy-duty option that has four screws instead of a cheaper two-screw model. Install the plate with 3-inch screws to ensure that they go through the frame and into the wall studs.

Remove the screws from the existing strike plate if you are keeping it. Replace them with 3-inch screws for stability.
