How to Install Soffit Vents in the Garage

Installing soffit vents is an easy DIY project. There are only a few steps, which include cutting a rectangular hole in the soffit and screwing in the vent. The vents are installed under the eaves on a building. Soffit vents are generally situated every 150 square feet of ceiling. They must have a roof vent as well to establish a good airflow. Soffit vents are an essential element in preserving your roof by eliminating condensation during the winter and keeping the attic cool in the summer. Both actions lessen the electric bill.

Instructions

    • 1

Follow the local codes as to the placement distance between vents. It is in your best interest to follow the codes as closely as possible in this instance. The code is designed to protect your building given the local weather. With this in mind, climb the ladder into the garage attic or where the roof trusses meet the outside walls.

    • 2

Locate the position for the vent in the soffit in the roof overhang. Make the position close enough or under a truss so the vent can be screwed or nailed into it. Cut a stencil of the vent by placing the cardboard over the vent and marking an outline of the vent. Cut the cardboard 1 inch smaller than the outline.

    • 3

Place the cardboard on the soffit and position it against the truss, centered in the soffit width. The additional inch will allow for nailing or screwing the soffit in place. Hammer a nail or drill a hole through the center of the cardboard outline.

Move to the outside of the building. Place the ladder under the intended site of the vent. Center the cardboard over the hole drill from above. Outline the cardboard on the soffit. Cut out the outline with the saw. Insert the soffit vent and nail or screw it in place.
