How to Repair Leaks in Bounders With Dual Pane Glass

The dual-pane windows featured in some models of Bounder motor homes are installed with a layer of caulking around the exterior window frame. After years of exposure to the elements, including rain, the caulking begins to degrade, causing the window to leak. Avoid the potential damage to the motor home’s interior by replacing the existing damaged caulk. Prep the exterior window correctly to ensure the replacement caulk effectively seals and waterproofs the window.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the existing caulk and the window’s exterior with a kitchen sponge and an all-purpose, mildly abrasive kitchen cleaner. Work the product into the window. Dampen a separate kitchen sponge to wipe away the product and allow the window to dry completely.

    • 2

Scrape off the existing caulk around the window frame with a razor blade. Holding the blade at a 30 degree angle, begin to scrape as much of the old, damaged caulk away as possible. Dampen a rag with denatured alcohol and wipe down the window frame to remove the remaining caulk pieces and residue.

    • 3

Mask the area surrounding the newly-removed caulk with painter’s tape. Load the caulking gun with clear silicone caulk and run a thin bead around the window frame’s perimeter. Apply a second bead of caulk if there is an empty space around the frame.

Slip on a rubber glove and run your finger on the newly applied caulk to smooth it down. Allow the caulk to dry for at least 12 hours before removing the painter’s tape.
