Bracing a Chair Spindle

If you have a chair with back spindles -- the decorative wood rails on a chair -- that are curved, the chair likely has curved chair braces on the side. These chair parts, also called hip rests, are banana shaped. If these curved spindles are broken, you can replace them through a process called chair bracing. Order new hip rests with predrilled holes from an online woodworking vendor.

Instructions

Unscrew the old braces with a flat-head screwdriver and remove them from the chair.

    • 2

Place the new braces on the chair’s back, making sure the holes align. Place the braces flush against the chair’s sides with the top of the brace flush against the chair’s back where the spindles are located and at the brace’s bottom flush against the chair’s seat.

Screw one oval-head screw into each hole with a flat-head screwdriver.
