How to Cement a Shower Floor Before You Hot Mop

Hot mopping is an older method used to create a waterproof barrier between the subfloor and tile surface in your shower. This barrier is vital to preventing leakage that can lead to damage in the subfloor. Although pre-made liners make the job of waterproofing your shower a much easier task, hot mopping is still an effective method. Before you begin the process of hot mopping, which involves the application of hot tar to the shower pan, you must prepare the surface with a layer of cement.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour the dry mortar into the shower pan. Spread it over the shower pan surface with a trowel.

    • 2

Measure the layer of mortar to ensure it's at least 1/4-inch thick.

    • 3

Smooth the mortar with the trowel, creating a slight downward slope toward the shower drain. Use your level to ensure the mortar slopes downward.

    • 4

Secure a spray attachment with a mist setting to the end of your garden hose. Attach the other end of the garden hose to the kitchen sink or feed it from the outside through the open bathroom window.

    • 5

Mist the dry mortar slowly until it's completely saturated. Use even strokes back and forth over the dry mortar to ensure the entire mud bed is wet.
