How to Remove Stripped Plumbing Nuts From PVC Pipe

Plumbing nuts are sometimes used to join pieces of PVC pipe together, and they work for awhile. However, when repairs are needed, you may find the nut is stripped or rusted, making it difficult to remove. You can get stripper nuts and bolts free from pipes by using a couple tricks. If you can access both ends of the bolt, the nut should come off easily. If you can only access one end, try and push the bolt through to release it.

Things You'll Need

  • Lubricant or water-displacing spray

Instructions

  1. Using Lubrication and Pliers

    • 1

Add a few drops of lubricant or water-displacing spray around the threads of the bolt and nut.

    • 2

Hold the head of the bolt with a wrench.

    • 3

Grasp the nut with the pliers.

    • 4

Turn the bolt counter-clockwise while holding the pliers steady, until the bolt comes free.

    Using a Hammer

    • 5

Brace the pipe by having an assistant help you, or holding it on the ground with your body weight.

    • 6

Tap the bolt with the hammer, using enough force to move it.

    • 7

Hit the sides of the bolt with the hammer to move the bolt back and forth in the hole.

    • 8

Continue hitting the hammer back and forth and on the top until it pops through the hole. You will have to retrieve it from inside the pipe.
