How to Lower a Galvanized Pipe Under the Sink

Some kitchen and laundry sinks use a galvanized pipe between the sink and the P-trap. When making repairs to the sink basket it is necessary to lower and remove the galvanized pipe from the sink. Unlike PVC or thin metal drain pipe, galvanized pipe uses coupling nuts that require pipe wrenches to remove. Lowering a galvanized pipe under a sink also requires holding the pipe so it doesn't turn as you are removing the coupling nuts.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 pipe wrenches

Instructions

    • 1

Place a bucket or other large container under the sink P-trap. The bucket or container can catch any water remaining in the P-trap.

    • 2

Hold the galvanized pipe between the sink and the P-trap with a pipe wrench. Loosen the coupling nut securing the galvanized pipe to the top of the P-trap with another pipe wrench. Once the coupling nut is loose, unthread it completely from the P-trap with your fingers.

    • 3

Grab the front of the P-trap with one hand, and loosen the coupling nut securing the P-trap to the wall drain pipe with a pipe wrench. Unthread the coupling nut completely from the P-trap. Empty the water inside the P-trap into the bucket or container, and set the P-trap out of the way.

Place a pipe wrench around the galvanized sink pipe to hold the pipe in place. Loosen the nut securing the galvanized sink pipe to the sink drain basket with the second pipe wrench. Once you loosen the nut, grab the galvanized pipe in one hand and unthread the nut completely. Lower the galvanized pipe from the sink and set it aside until you are ready to reinstall it.
