DIY Dryer Vent Sill

All non-condensing dryers must be vented. If you have a dryer in a basement, one of the ways that you can vent the dryer is by running it through the sill. The sill is the wooden framework that sits between the concrete foundation and the wooden upper floors of the house. Installing a dryer vent through a sill is a project that an experienced DIY'er can handle over the course of a weekend.

Instructions

    • 1

Use measuring tape to measure the distance between the dryer and the location where you wish to place the vent through the sill. The distance between the dryer and the vent should be no more than 25 feet.

    • 2

Use a pencil to mark the location on the sill where you wish to place the hole. Attach a 1/4-inch drill bit to an electric drill. The bit must be long enough to penetrate through the entire sill. Drill a pilot hole through the mark on the sill.

    • 3

Check the outside face of the sill for the pilot hole. If obstructions are located nearby, relocate the hole.

    • 4

Hold the dryer vent up to the inside face of the sill so the vent is centered on the pilot hole. Trace around the vent passage with a pencil. This will give you a mark to trace when drilling the hole in the sill.

    • 5

Use a jigsaw or reciprocating saw to cut out a hole in the sill along the tracing.

    • 6

Sand down any rough edges on the inside of the sill with sandpaper.

    • 7

Slip the dryer vent through the hole, working from the outside face of the sill. Align the vent hood so the opening points downward. Secure it in place by driving screws through the holes in the vent face into the sill.

    • 8

Connect the exit vent on the back of the dryer to the inside collar of the vent protruding through the sill. Secure it in place with hose clamps at each end.
