How to Oil the Ring on a Self-Aligning Pillow Block Fan

Pillow blocks are used in industrial applications for supporting driveshafts and other spinning mechanisms, such as fans. The pillow block itself is a clamped, shaped fixture that houses a spinning ring and bearings. This assembly needs to stay properly lubricated at all times, both to allow the shaft to spin freely and for cooling and protective purposes. A DIYer who has a grease gun and the recommended lubricant can oil or lubricate the ring in a self-aligning pillow block fan with little effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase lubrication grease appropriate for the pillow block fan's operating environment. For example, in saltwater-based environments, buy a grease that's resistant to the corrosive effects of salt. If your fan requires no special grease type, purchase an NLGI No. 2-rated lubricant, which is applicable to most operating environments.

    • 2

Remove the dust cap from the grease bearing, typically located at the top of the pillow fitting. If needed, use a clean rag to wipe away any grease.

    • 3

Connect the nozzle of the grease gun to the lubrication bearing inlet. Slowly press the trigger on the nozzle of the gun. Continue filling the pillow bearing until you see a small amount of lubricant seep out of the seals.

    • 4

Replace the dust cap on the bearing.

    • 5

Wipe away any grease seeping out from the ring or bearing seals with the rag.
