How to Install a Genie Carriage Chain Drive

A broken carriage or worn inner slide on your Genie chain drive garage door opener can cause the door to remain shut when the Genie's motor engages the chain. A damaged carriage or slide could also allow the carriage to disengage from the chain as the door rises. That could cause the door to fall on you or your car. Installing a new carriage means you must install a new inner slide compatible with the carriage.

Things You'll Need

  • Pliers
  • Assorted sockets
  • Socket wrench
  • Replacement carriage

Instructions

    • 1

Close the garage door. Pull on the rope connected to the original carriage to release the carriage from the chain.

    • 2

Grab the clevis pin holding the cotter pin in the carriage with pliers. Pull the clevis pin from the small hole in the end of the cotter pin. Push the cotter pin from the carriage to release the garage door arm from the carriage.

    • 3

Remove the bolts from one of the rail clamps along the rail with a socket and socket wrench. Slide the clamp off the rail.

    • 4

Slide the old carriage off the rail. Slide the replacement carriage onto the rail in its place. Replace the rail clamp and secure the clamp with the bolts you previously removed.

    • 5

Untie the rope from the original carriage. Tie the rope onto the new carriage. Attach the garage door arm to the new carriage with the original cotter pin and clevis pin. Discard the old carriage.

    • 6

Remove the bolts holding the original carriage inner slide on the chain. Pry the inner slide from the chain with a flat head screwdriver.

    • 7

Press the down button on the door opener. Face the garage door while the opener is running and watch the chain to ensure the chain is moving toward the door. Let the opener run until it shuts itself off.

    • 8

Mark the location of both carriage ends onto the garage door opener chain with chalk. Press the up button on the garage door opener. The chain should move away from the door. Let the opener run until it shuts itself off.

    • 9

Stand beneath the chain and rail with your back facing the garage door. Snap the teeth on the inner slide into the left side of the chain. The teeth must face the rail when you install the slide.

    • 10

Insert the screws, provided with the new inner slide, through the slide. The screw heads must face the rail. Attach the lock washers and hex nuts onto the screws. Tighten the nuts to secure the new inner slide onto the chain.

    • 11

Lift the garage door manually until the new inner slide connects with the new carriage. The carriage should lock onto the inner slide automatically.
