How to Lay Clay Mortar

Mortar is the go-to tool for keeping bricks, tile and similar materials in place. The kind of mortar used varies on the project, but clay mortar is often used around fireplaces and other areas where the temperature will become hot. Using clay mortar is not unlike using other kinds of mortar, such as thinset, and it is fairly simple to apply. With the help of a few tools, you can lay clay mortar like a professional.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread a thin layer of clay mortar by using the flat end of a trowel, putting the mortar on the substrate or other surface on which you plan to apply bricks or tile. Make the layer even and just thin enough so that you don't see the substrate or floor.

    • 2

Place a pile of clay mortar in the center of one brick or tile. Use the trowel to spread the mortar out to the sides of the brick or tile to cover its surface completely. Plan to use enough mortar to make a layer that is about 0.8 inch, or 2 centimeters, thick but not thicker than the trowel's notch.

    • 3

Set the mortar-treated side of the brick or tile on top of the substrate or floor that has the mortar coating. The mortar should stick to itself and keep the brick or tile in place. Push down on the brick or tile to form a good seal.

Repeat the process for the rest of the materials, and allow the mortar to dry fully before touching the project.
