How to Use a Butt Splice

A rubber or metal butt splice is used to reconnect a broken or frayed wire, creating safe repair. Butt splices are available in two different styles: insulated and noninsulated. Noninsulated wire butt splices are less expensive and used to repair frayed or broken wires throughout the home, including your speaker wire. Insulated wire splices are recommended if you’re repair will be exposed to heat over long periods of time. Either way, the butt splices are installed in the same manner.

Examine the product attached to the wires to ensure there is no electricity flowing. Isolate the broken wire and strip approximately five-eighths inch of the rubber casing with a wire stripper.

    • 2

Twist the wires on the first section and insert them into the metal or plastic butt splice, paying attention that the bare wire is completely concealed. Using crimping pliers, apply pressure over the newly covered wires to hold the butt splice in place.

Repeat this process on the second section of wire, one again paying attention that the entire area of exposed wire is covered. Wrap the entire section of repaired wire with black electrical tape before plugging in and using the product.
