How to Maintain a Propane Storage Tank

Propane, also known as liquefied petroleum gas, is a versatile fuel commonly used for cooking, heating and motor fuel because it is clean-burning. Proper storage of propane tanks is an important practice that ensures increased safety for everyone and reduces the need for costly repairs and maintenance.

  Find a location to store the propane tank that is outdoors and well-ventilated. The propane tank should be placed on a firm, flat, non-flammable surface such as concrete or pavement.

  Position the propane tank upright at all times. Propane may escape if propane tanks are stored improperly.

  Turn off all control valves completely when propane is not being used.

  Check for leaks by making sure there is no "rotten egg" smell, all control valves are completely turned off and the propane tank is upright. Carbon monoxide and gas detectors can be installed for extra safety.

  Inspect the propane tank for structural damage including dents, bulges, cracks and excessive rust.
