How to Check the Fill Level of LP Tanks

LP (liquid petroleum) gas is a compressed, liquid form of gas that is easy to transport and stored in metal LP tanks. LP gas is used both for heating the home as well as portable fuel for outdoor grills. Checking the level of gas in a large home storage tank is easy since these tanks are required to have a fill gauge on them. Checking the fill level on smaller, portable LP tanks takes a little more effort since they typically do not have gauges on them.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a bathroom scale on a flat surface.

    • 2

Place the propane tank on top of the scale and note its weight.

    • 3

Subtract 18 from the amount of weight displayed on the scale. The average portable propane tank has a capacity of 20 lbs. of fuel. When empty, the tank itself weighs approximately 17 to 18 lbs.; and when full, it weighs 37 to 38 lbs. For example, if the weight on the scale is 20 lbs., then subtract 18 (approximate weight of the tank) from 20 (current weight of the tank plus gas) for a remainder of 2 pounds. There are two pounds of propane gas left in the tank.
