How to Relight a Gas Range Pilot Light

Many models of gas ranges more than 10 years old have pilot lights designed to make it easy for the owner to turn on the oven or the stovetop. Some of these ranges have pilot lights for only the oven and some have pilot lights for both the oven and the stovetop. Lighting either of these pilot lights is something most any homeowner can accomplish with simple tools available in most home workshops.

Instructions

  1. Gas Oven Pilot Light

    • 1

Turn on the main gas line to the oven. Find the main gas control valve at the back of the oven and turn the valve so it is parallel to the gas line.

    • 2

Open the main door to the oven. Remove the racks in the oven. Remove the bottom panel of the oven, revealing the pilot light.

    • 3

Light the pilot light, using a long fireplace match. Light the match and place the flame directly in front of the pilot light orifice. The pilot light should light immediately. If the pilot light fails to light, clean the pilot light opening with a wire brush and attempt to relight.

    • 4

Turn on the oven thermostat. The pilot light should extend and envelop a small metal bulb called a thermocouple. If the pilot light does not extend, clean the pilot light orifice with a metal brush.

    • 5

Replace the bottom of the panel. Replace the cooking racks. Close the oven door.

    Gas Oven Cooktop Pilot Light

    • 6

Remove the metal cooktop that covers the gas lines supplying each cooktop burner. Gently lift the metal cooktop panel from the front or the rear and place it out of the way.

    • 7

Observe the cooktop burners and the supply lines. Each burner will have an orifice next to the supply line that is the pilot light. Light each orifice that is not already burning.

    • 8

Clean the pilot lights that will not light, using a small metal brush or a toothpick to open the hole in the orifice. Relight the pilot light.

    • 9

Adjust the pilot light height. Follow the pilot light gas line to a central valve on the top of the cooktop. Look for a screw on the side of this valve. Use a screwdriver to turn the screw to adjust this size of the pilot flame to approximately 3/8 inch.

    • 10

Replace the metal cooktop cover. Turn on each burner to be sure the pilot lights are working.
