How to Repair a Kitchenaid Igniter

Kitchenaid igniters are found in the bottom of the oven, under the oven base and gas burner cover. They are covered by a metal safety cover, which has two screws holding it in place. Two wires run out of the back that connect to a plastic plug, which in turn is pushed into an over socket. Some igniter models' wires are attach to the oven wires with two ceramic nuts. Periodically, the ignitor should be tested. However, if it malfunctions, the igniter should be replaced.

  Pull out the oven base by hand. Remove the nuts holding the gas burner cover in place, usually wing nuts, and put the cover to one side.

  Turn on the gas. If there is a strong smell of gas, or if the igniter only produces a small orange-red flame, the igniter should be replaced. Also, if the igniter takes more than two minutes to light---even if it has a healthy flame---it needs to be replaced. Trying to fix the igniter itself is ill-advised, and the coil inside the metal cover is very fragile and will easily break if touched.

  Turn off the gas and power. Pull out the igniter's plug from the socket. If it has ceramic nuts, untwist them and loosen the igniter wires from the oven wires. Unscrew the two nuts holding the igniter in place and remove the igniter.

  Screw the new igniter into place. Push the igniter's plug into the oven's socket. If the wires have ceramic nuts, twist each igniter wire together with one oven wire. Turn on the power and gas. If the igniter flame is sufficient and takes only a few seconds to ignite, it is working well. Replace the gas burner cover and oven base.
