How to Make a Black Pipe Burner

Pipe burners are long cylindrical pieces of pipe that are usually installed into the bottom of gas fireplaces by threading them into the gas feed pipe. The burners are threaded at one end, are hollow in the middle, and have a line of evenly-spaced holes along their lengths to allow gas to escape. Black gas pipe comes in different lengths and is threaded at both ends. Therefore, the length of pipe should be decided on before creating the burner.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean both threaded ends of the black gas pipe, using a wire brush and an old rag. Apply threading compound around the thread at one end of the pipe. Screw on a metal end cap by hand, then tighten it into place with a pipe wrench.

    • 2

Place the pipe horizontally in a vise. Use a felt tip pen to make evenly-spaced markings in a line along the side of the pipe.

    • 3

Place a metal hole punch on each mark, and tap the end of the punch with a hammer. This will make small indentations on the pipe for the drill bit to bite into.

    • 4

Use a 3/16-inch metal drill bit to carefully drill through the side of the pipe at each indentation. Place a metal reamer into each hole and twist it to free the hole of any metal shavings. Loosen the vise and remove the pipe.

    • 5

Attach the pipe burner to the gas feeder line in your fireplace and tighten it securely.
