Substitutes for Copper Tubing as Heating Oil Lines

Alternatives to copper tubing are becoming more popular due to the rise in cost of copper. Other metals, plastics, vinyl and rubber are all being used as tubing for fuel oils. All of the alternatives have positives and negatives associated with their use but use the latest technology available to replace fuel oil copper tubing.
  1. Metal

    • Steel is used in oil piping systems to manufactured homes. The tubes are externally protected against corrosion, making them an attractive alternative to copper. However, stainless steel's thermal resistance is less than that of copper.

    PVC

    • PVC is a plastic alternative to copper tubing for fuel oil. ClearFlo clear industrial-grade PVC tubing and hose has a smooth interior, allowing oil and fuel to flow freely. A specially formulated grade of this alternative must be used because the oil will eventually harden the PVC, limiting the tubes' pliability.

    Vinyl

    • Vinyl compound tubing is used as an alternative to copper because it is does not become brittle and it resists swelling. It is limited to a working temperature of 170 degrees Fahrenheit. It must be kept out of the sunlight as it is not UV-resistant.

    Rubber

    • Viton rubber is used in tubing designed for the transfer of fuel and oil. It is soft and pliable as well as UV-, oil- and chemical-resistant. However, it is not as hard as other tubing choices.
