How to Remove Abandoned Propane Tanks

Propane tanks need to be disposed of if they have been abandoned or the life of the propane tank has expired. A propane tank usually lasts six to 10 years before it needs to be replaced or disposed of. Local garbage collectors will not pick up propane tanks, and throwing them away in regular trash is illegal in most states. Propane tanks, even if empty, often contain a residual amount of gas that can be a safety issue, so dispose of your propane tanks safely and legally.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your local propane company, fire department or a company specializing in removal of hazardous materials. They will be able to relay more information concerning local laws.

    • 2

Hire a local disposal company. Employing unlicensed workers to remove gas may not only be illegal, it can cause serious damage, bodily harm and fire.

    • 3

Use a licensed disposal company to transfer remaining gas to another container, depressurize the tank, remove all fittings and properly dispose of empty containers.
