Read all safety information that comes with your gas log fireplace. Be sure you understand the risks and safety precautions that should be taken before you attempt to light the gas logs. Also, study the manual and pictures so you are familiar with the location of all knobs and switches on your gas log fireplace. Most gas log fireplaces are lit by opening the lower control compartment on the fireplace. This is where you will find the gas control knob.
Make sure remote wall switch is turned to "off".
Verify that the main line shutoff valve is open.
Push in gas control knob slightly and turn clockwise to "off". Be sure to push in knob only slightly and do not force the knob.
Wait five minutes to clear out any gas. If you smell gas, stop what you are doing and extinguish any open flame. Open windows. Do not light any appliances. Do not touch any electrical switches. Do not use any phones; immediately call your gas supplier from a neighbor's phone. If your gas supplier cannot be reached, call the fire department.
Assuming gas is clear, push in gas control knob slightly and turn counterclockwise to "Pilot".
Push in control knob all the way and hold in. Immediately light the pilot by triggering the spark ignitor (pushing the button) until the pilot lights. Continue to hold in the control knob for about 1 1/2 minutes after the pilot is lit. Release knob and it will pop back up. Pilot should remain lit. If it goes out, repeat steps six and seven.
Turn gas control knob counterclockwise to "On". Your gas logs should be lit and ready for use. Enjoy!
