Turn off the gas at the propane tank. Brush threading compound all around the thread on one end of the first piece of gas pipe. Screw it by hand into the Tee/90-degree elbow coupling on the existing propane gas line. Place a pipe wrench around the pipe and turn it clockwise to tighten the pipe in place.
Brush compound around the thread on the other end of the first piece of gas pipe. Screw on a steel coupling by hand. Tighten it in place using the wrench. Brush compound to the thread on one end of the second piece of gas pipe and screw it into the other end of the coupling. Tighten the pipe to the coupling with the wrench. Now install all the pieces of the gas pipe in place using couplings and compound until the gas appliance is reached.
Brush compound around the thread on the end of the last piece of gas pipe and screw on a gas shut-off valve by hand. Place a crescent wrench around the valve body and tighten it in place. Turn off the new shut-off valve and turn on the gas at the tank.
Mix some soapy water and apply it to all newly-installed couplings. If any bubbles are seen it means that gas is escaping from the coupling, and the pipe entering the coupling has to be tightened until the bubbles stop and gas no longer escapes.
