Hose Material Compatibility With Propane

Liquid propane gas lines are made of different materials, depending on where the line is located. The location may be indoors, outdoors or underground. Check with your local laws before installing or changing propane hoses.
  1. Service Piping

    • Service piping, also called yard line, runs from the propane tank to an underground steel pipe. This line is made of copper tubing or plastic polyethylene piping. This fuel line must be installed according to local laws because copper tubing is not legal in all states.

    Underground

    • Underground lines connect the service piping to the house. Lines must run underground at a depth that is in accordance with location and local laws. Underground piping materials vary by location but are commonly made of steel. Regardless of the material the propane line is made of, it is recommended that extra precautions be taken. Protect underground lines with PVC sleeving or protective tape.

    Indoors

    • Gas flex lines are used to connect appliances to a liquid propane gas (LPG) system. Each connection to an appliance must have a shut-off valve. Flex lines are metallic and flexible to allow for easier installation and the occasional moving of the appliance.
