How to Get Your Propane Tank in the Ground

Underground propane tanks can be a useful component for your home as a primary or secondary energy source. Propane tanks can be used to help heat your home, operate various gas-powered appliances and serve as an energy source for other areas of your property. Instructions

    • 1

Locate a centralized area of your property that will serve as the location of your propane tank installation. This area should be near your home or other location that will be using the tank as its main energy supplier. The area should also be easily accessible for propane tanks to use during tank refills. Speak to your gas or electric company for more information on proper locations on your specific property.

    • 2

Use your shovel or similar digging device to dig a large hole that will serve as the base of your underground tank. This hole should allow for half of your propane tank to be covered in backfill, leaving the top half of the tank exposed. This size will differ depending on the size of your propane tank. Contact a city developer or excavator to check your property for any pre-existing pipes in the ground before digging.

Place your propane tank into your freshly dug hole. Begin filling the hole with your backfill material to cover the bottom half of the tank. Do not cover any connections, piping origins or meters with the backfill. Rocks, clay or sand may be used as your backfill material.
