Regulations on Propane Suppliers for Home Heating

Registration

• Propane dealers must register with the Department of Consumer Protection every year. By law, dealers must disclose the terms and conditions of all propane contracts including the amount paid, number of gallons committed and the secured performance. The DCP reserves the right to revoke or suspend any registration certificates.

Contract Requirements

• Propane dealer consumer contracts must offer a guaranteed price plan, including a fixed price contract. The terms and conditions contained in the contract must be in plain language and in a 12-point boldface uniform font.

Advertisements

• Registered suppliers are required to display their registration number in all advertisements. Additionally, a propane supplier that advertises a price must offer it "at least 24 hours or until the next advertised price is publicized."

Violations

• Discrepancies or violations are deemed unfair trade practices and might result in restraining orders, punitive damages awards, civil penalties up to $5,000 for willful violations and $25,000 for restraining order violations.
