How to Way to Bond Gastite

Gastite is the trade name of a specially designed, flexible corrugated gas pipe meant for home and commercial natural and liquefied propane gas heating installations. While Gastite protects your home against lightning, thanks to its exclusive shielded construction, you still need to bond it in order to conform with the National Electric Code and to ensure the absolute highest level of protection. You bond Gastite by installing a bonding clamp around a Gastite pipe or a steel pipe that is connected to a Gastite pipe.

Instructions

  1. Bonding Clamp on Gastite Fitting

    • 1

Open each screw of your Erico clamp with your screwdriver while grasping its hex nut with your pliers so that the brackets are separated and the screws remain inserted in the top bracket. Set the hex nuts aside.

    • 2

Align the top bracket with the screws inserted so that the front of the bracket touches the back of the Gastite fitting.

    • 3

Attach the bottom bracket and hand-tighten the hex nuts to the screws.

    • 4

Grasp each hex nut with the pliers and turn each screw into its hex nut with your screwdriver so that it is tight, while making sure that both sides of the bracket are even with each other.

    • 5

Open the top bonding wire screw, insert bonding wire into the wire hole, and connect the bonding wire to your ground (a non-conducting material such as plastic).

    • 6

Firmly tighten the bonding wire screw so that it holds the wire in place.

    Bonding Clamp on Pipe

    • 7

Clean and remove all coating from the steel pipe, or Gastite stub, to which you will affix the bonding clamp.

    • 8

Use your screwdriver to open the clamp screws, and use your pliers to grasp any hex nuts or other connectors as necessary. Keep the screws inserted in the top bracket of the clamp and put the connectors aside.

    • 9

Place the top bracket with the screws inserted just past any recessed or beveled edge of the pipe.

    • 10

Attach the bottom bracket of the clamp and hand-tighten the connectors.

    • 11

Use your screwdriver to turn each screw while grasping its connectors to tighten the clamp as much as possible, and make sure that each side of the clamp is tightened evenly.

    • 12

Open the bonding wire screw on top of the clamp with your screwdriver and insert the bonding wire. Connect the bonding wire to your ground (non-conductive surface such as plastic).

    • 13

Firmly tighten the bonding wire screw with your screwdriver so that it holds the wire in place.
