Go to the meter location in your house with pencil and paper in hand. They are usually outside the house in a metal box with a glass bulb, though they can occasionally be inside in the basement or a utility area of your home.
Read the number indicated by each dial, starting from the left and working right. There are typically four or five dials.
Record each number on your paper. If a dial is in between two numbers, record the lower of the two, unless the number is in between 0 and 9, in which case record 9. If an arrow appears to be directly on a number, check the dial to the right to see if it has passed zero. If it has not, record the next lowest number from the original dial. The numbers represent kilowatt hours.
Check last month's DTE bill fir the kilowatt hours from last month's meter reading. Subtract last month's reading from your current reading to find how many kilowatt hours you have used since then.
