How to Cut a Propane Bill

Propane is most commonly used to heat homes and other buildings. Depending on the size of the building in question propane bills can become quite large at times. While the cost of propane itself cannot be controlled, the cost of heating a home or other buildings can be reduced by keeping a building's propane system properly maintained and running efficiently, and by sealing drafts. Leaks and drafts mean the loss of heat and therefore wasted energy. By replacing old weather stripping, caulk, or molding in your home, you can dramatically reduce the amount of lost energy and your bills.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the flame or smoke from a candle or incense stick near windows, doors, outlets, and vents to find drafts. Running your hand near these areas to feel for cold air can also work.

    • 2

Remove old or leaking caulking. Clean the area with rubbing alcohol or household cleaner and rag to remove dust and debris.

    • 3

Caulk around windows, door frames, chimneys, electrical sockets, window air conditioning units or any other areas with a leak.

    • 4

Remove damaged weather stripping. Clean area and replace with new weather stripping. Weather stripping can also be placed vertically along doorstops to further prevent drafts.

    • 5

Place a door sweep at the bottom of any doors leading to the outside.

    • 6

Hang shades or curtains to help regulate temperatures.

    • 7

Install fitted storm windows or add plastic covering to single-paned or drafty windows during cooler months.

    • 8

Close exterior windows and doors, as well as interior doors to unheated areas, when operating heater.

    • 9

Purchase draft-proofing kits for electrical outlets and light fixtures. Electrical outlet safety plugs can also help reduce energy loss through exterior walls.
