DIY: Natural Gas to Propane Conversions

Appliances such as ranges, water heaters, dryers and barbeque grills run on electricity or gas power. Two types of gas are commonly used today: natural gas and propane. Many of these gas-powered appliances are able to be converted from one gas to another. Natural gas to propane conversions can be done at home with the purchase of a conversion kit. As with any home improvement project, caution should be used to avoid any accidents.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure that the appliance can be converted from natural gas use to propane use. Some appliances are manufactured so that they cannot be converted. Contact the manufacturer if you are unsure if the appliance can be converted.

    • 2

Purchase a conversion kit from the manufacturer or home improvement store. The kit should contain the necessary orifices, regulators, valves, burner components and pilot lights.

    • 3

Turn off the gas supply to the appliance and unplug any electrical power sources. Remove the top, sides or panels that cover the appliance components.

    • 4

Remove all the orifices, regulators and other parts that are designed for natural gas use. Replace them with the components from the kit. Do not mix up the different parts. Propane should only be used with parts made for propane. Ensure that all connections are tightly secured.

Perform a check for gas leaks. Prepare a solution of soap water by mixing dish soap with water. Turn on the gas supply, but not the gas. Pour a small amount of the soap water on the connection. If bubbles result, there is a gas leak. Turn the gas off and tighten the connections. Repeat the soap water test before using the appliance.
