K100 Tank Removal

The BMW K100 is a motorcycle model that first rolled off the assembly line in 1983. While the specific instructions for removing a K100 gas tank will vary slightly, depending on the model year in which your motorcycle was built, most of the principles remain basically the same. Changing out the fuel tank is a necessary part of long-term maintenance for this bike.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the left kneepad. You'll find one screw to remove down by your foot, and two up in the glove box area. Then, if you have the K100RT or K100LT, take out the radio or glove box. If not, move Step 2.

    • 2

Take out the screws connecting the upper and lower panels. Then go around front and take two screws out of the facing. Disconnect the fuel lines and cover them with your pipe caps and remove the electrical plug.

    • 3

Use your ratchet to take the 10 millimeter bolt out that is behind the tank.

    • 4

Press on the side panels to take them out. By applying pressure away from yourself, you're using the flexibility of the pieces to remove them.

    • 5

Pull the tank up from the back side and bring it towards yourself. This will free it from the bike.
