How Do I Winterize My Natural Gas Well?

Natural gas wells operate under high pressure and are unlikely to be fazed by a change in temperature. The portion of the well that must be treated and “winterized” is the top. The hoses and wellhead need to be heated if you are in a particularly cold area to keep the system from clogging up. The over-cooling of the natural gas in the pipes can cause a clog that builds the pressure, potentially causing a blowout.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap the wellhead with foam insulation. It will not fit exactly around the fittings, but make it as snug as you can without hurting the integrity of the connections.

    • 2

Use the trash bags to secure the foam in place as well as protect it from moisture.

    • 3

Wrap the trash bags with the duct tape to hold the foam and bags securely in place and together. This helps seal the fitting from moisture.

    • 4

Run a strip of heating tape down and around any exposed piping. This helps to keep the pipes just above freezing; it does not produce excessive heat.

    • 5

Wrap the pipes with black piping foam. It has a small slit down the middle so it can run over your piping. It is available in different sizes; select the one that will fit snugly on your piping.
