How to Convert Two Gas Meters to One

Converting two gas meters into one meter involves using the correct size meter and gas lines. Consolidating meters would be needed for consolidating a two-unit apartment that is about to become a single unit. The two individual pipe lines should be consolidated into a single line with a capacity equal to or greater than the sum of the two original lines. Caution should be used when working on these types of lines as gas lines can be very dangerous.

Instructions

Shut off the gas at the main shutoff located before the first gas meter. Remove one of the pipes to allow the gas to escape the closed section, which has the two meters. Expose the pipe joint that connects the first meter to the main pipeline. Remove that joint using the pipe wrench.

    • 2

Choose a new pipe and joint that has a capacity greater than the sum of the two original pipes. Place this pipe from the gas main line over to the new meter location. Connect the input side of the new meter to the end of the new pipe.

Connect a T-connector to the output side of the meter. Connect each of the two gas lines from the units to one side of the T-connector. Make sure each connection is airtight. Turn the main gas line back on and check for gas leaks.
