My Kenmore Gas Burners Are Not Igniting

All gas stoves -- including Kenmore models -- will eventually suffer from some form of blockage or other issues that keep the gas burners from igniting. As a general rule, there are several mundane issues that can keep a gas burner from igniting; knowing which issue you are dealing with can help you save money on otherwise costly repairs.
  1. Gas Tank

    • When troubleshooting any gas stove problem, start by checking whether there is any gas in the tank. Most gas stoves will run until the very last of the gas is gone, so if you were able to light the burner just moments before, you are probably out of gas.

    Gas Line

    • Not all issues are directly related to the burners. If you have sufficient gas in your tank but the burners don’t want to light, you likely have an issue in the lines themselves. A common cause is that the shut-off switch is in the “Off” position. Ensure that the gas line switch is in the “Open” position, and then try turning on your burners again.

    Dirt and Grime

    • Dirt and grime can build up beneath the tops of the burners and block the arrival of gas from the line, which means that even if your pilot light or electrical lighter is working the burners will still not turn on. Remove the burner tops on your Kenmore gas stove, and clean them completely to remove any dirt and food particles. Replace the caps, and light the burners.

    Ignition Switch

    • If you have an electrical ignition switch rather than a pilot light and your Kenmore burners aren’t working, there could be an issue with the switch. For example, if you hear the clicking sound but nothing is happening, you have an issue with the switch. If the switch isn’t clicking, it could be a sign that power isn’t getting to the ignition and that the part needs to be replaced.
