How to Remove Carpet Adhesive From a Basement Floor

Carpet is often attached to a concrete floor with adhesive. When you pull the carpet out, the adhesive may stay behind on the flooring. Removing the adhesive takes a combination of manual labor and assistance from a chemical adhesive remover. You can find less toxic adhesive removers for use in poorly ventilated basements.

Things You'll Need

  • Floor scraper
  • Broom
  • Soy-based adhesive remover

Instructions

    • 1

Rent a mechanical floor scraper, which resemble a floor buffer but has a scraping disk instead of a buffer pad.

    • 2

Plug in the machine and run it back and forth along the basement floor to get up as much adhesive as possible. Sweep up the debris and discard.

    • 3

Apply a soy-based adhesive remover on any glue spots the scraper did not get up. Let the adhesive remover sit for as long as directed on the package.

    • 4

Scrape up the softened glue with a putty knife. Rinse the floor with water and dry with clean towels.
