How to Adjust a Doorway Threshold

The threshold is the bottom part of the doorway and is usually a separate piece. The threshold is made of either wood or some kind of metal, typically aluminum. The purpose of the threshold is to provide a transition between the flooring on one side of the door with the flooring on the other side. The threshold is usually nailed or screwed in place and can move or pull loose from the floor over time and may need to be readjusted.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the threshold to determine how it is fastened to the floor. A wooden threshold may consist of plugs to hide the screw or nail heads. You can pry off the plugs with a flat head screwdriver to access the fasteners underneath.

    • 2

Remove the nails or screws carefully to avoid damaging the threshold. If the threshold is screwed in place, remove the screws with the screwdriver. If the threshold is secured with nails, carefully pry them out of the floor with a flat pry bar and a hammer. Work the nails out a little at a time until they are completely free.

Adjust the threshold and close the door to ensure a proper fit. If there is carpeting, ensure that its edge is completely under the threshold. Reinsert the screws or nails with the screwdriver or hammer, depending on the type of fastener.
