How to Stop Carpet Snag

A carpet snag may result in the unraveling of a section of carpet if not stopped. Snags normally result from a pet's claw or other sharp object catching on a carpet loop. Once the loop pulls from the carpet, the entire row may continue to separate from the base of the carpet. Stop a carpet snag before it ruins the look of your flooring.

Instructions

    • 1

Place 1- to 2-inch pieces of masking tape around the carpet snag. Press the tape securely onto the top of the carpet. The tape stops the snag from unraveling the carpet any further.

    • 2

Snip the loop still attached to the carpet pad with a pair of sharp scissors. Clip the carpet loop as close to the bottom as possible.

    • 3

Pull the carpet surrounding the affected area back with your fingers. Apply a drop of carpet adhesive into the area.

    • 4

Grasp the carpet loop with a pair of needle-nose pliers. Stick the two carpet ends into the adhesive with the loop sticking up. Hold the loop down with the pliers for 30 seconds, using medium pressure to secure the carpet back into the flooring.

Remove the masking tape slowly from the carpet. Avoid walking on the area for 24 hours.
