How to Remove Sheetrock Dust From Floors

House or commercial building renovations often require drywall installation, and the subsequent sheetrock dust that falls to the floor is part of the cleaning up process. Use dust masks when dealing with sheetrock to avoid dust inhalation and respiratory issues. While cleaning sheetrock dust from flooring is easy enough, dust removal means very thorough cleaning, so take time to do the job properly.

Instructions

  1. Hardwood Floors

    • 1

Use a broom and dustpan to sweep up as much of the sheetrock dust as possible. Empty the pan into a trash can with a sealable lid. Sweep the floor several times, and wait 15 minutes between each sweeping to get all the dust that settles back onto the floor.

    • 2

Vacuum the floors. Use a vacuum cleaner that features a HEPA filter to reduce the amount of dust. Vacuum all spaces and crevices within your hardwood floors.

    • 3

Wipe the floors with a clean mop or damp sponge. Replace the water several times to avoid smearing dust-laden water on your floors. Go over the floors two to four times, depending on the severity of the dust.

    Carpeting

    • 4

Use a vacuum cleaner that features a HEPA filter to vacuum the carpeting.

    • 5

Use a carpet cleaner with water to remove sheetrock dust from the carpet. Go over the carpet at least twice with the cleaner.

    • 6

Allow the carpet to dry before placing furniture and other items. Place fans near the carpet to help it dry faster.
