How to Get Thick Carpet to Stand Back Up After Something Heavy Has Mashed It Down

Moving heavy objects from a spot on a thick carpet often leaves the carpet flat in that spot. The heavy object is often a sofa, table, or some other large piece of furniture. The flattened spots of the carpet usually have a different, shaded appearance from the rest of the carpet. When you find one of these indentations, raise the carpet fibers back up to give the carpet surface a uniform appearance.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Plug a steam iron into a nearby outlet. Allow it to heat up.

    • 2

Hold the steam iron 2 to 3 inches above the indented spot, without touching the carpet with the iron. Release steam from the iron into the carpet indentation.

    • 3

Move the iron aside, and brush the smashed carpet fibers with your fingertips. Continue steaming and brushing the carpet until the fibers stand up.

    • 4

Adjust a hair dryer to a warm setting, and hold the dryer over the indented spot, if the carpet contains acrylic or modacrylic fibers. Brush the carpet with your fingertips while using the hair dryer, until the smashed fibers stand up. This process takes approximately the same amount of time as using the steam iron.

Place an ice cube on top of each small, indented spot left from furniture legs. Allow the ice cubes to melt onto the spots. The carpet fibers should rise again.
