How to Waterproof with a Trowel

Trowels are used in laying tile and pouring cement. But that is not the full scope of their capabilities. Trowels are versatile, and they are the primary tool when it comes to waterproofing and applying waterproof sealant. From laying waterproof membrane around gaps and joints around piping to sealing block walls, the process of spreading waterproof sealant on a target surface is fairly straightforward.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the surface that you will be applying the seal on. Use a wet towel and a cleaning agent to wipe away any dust or other contaminates that will interfere with the proper adhesion of the waterproof sealant.

    • 2

Mix the waterproof sealant using the drill with mixing attachment.

    • 3

Scoop the waterproof sealant out of its container with the trowel and apply it to the target surface. Spread the waterproof sealant evenly and smooth it out. If you are applying a cover over the waterproof sealant, such as a board or flashing, drag the toothed side of the trowel through the sealant to create a better adhesive bond. Using a toothed trowel creates a better surface because it allows maximum coverage of the target area so that when the two surfaces meet, pockets of air are not formed.

Clean the trowel with water and soap when you are done and before the adhesive has set.
