How to Remove VCT Flooring

Vinyl, or VCT, a commonly used flooring material in homes, is cheap, durable and needs minimal maintenance. Over time, vinyl may dull or even discolor due to sunlight or the chemicals in cleaners, requiring you to remove it. Unfortunately, vinyl flooring is laid with strong adhesive, which makes removal time-consuming and labor-intensive. Employ some tried techniques to make VCT removal a bit easier.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the windows and doors to the room you are working in.

    • 2

      Plug in your hair dryer.

    • 3

Hold the hair dryer close to the vinyl tile to heat the adhesive underneath.

    • 4

Wriggle a putty knife beneath the tile and pry it up. Work up all the tiles throughout the room this way.

    • 5

Put on gloves and a respirator.

    • 6

Apply adhesive remover on the remaining adhesive on the floor. Use the adhesive remover according to label instructions, as most removers are specific on application, sitting time and removal. Failure to take up the adhesive remover in time can cause the adhesive to re-harden.

    • 7

Remove the adhesive remover from the floor, using water and a rag, following the instructions on the label.
