How to Seal Concrete Floors Before a Carpet

Sealing concrete before laying carpet is a necessary step. Concrete is porous and attracts water. Sealant helps to create a barrier to keep moisture out. Failure to seal concrete can lead to moisture in the carpeting and, in turn, mold or mildew. Seal the concrete properly before laying carpeting to ensure the concrete is protected and the carpeting stays dry.

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep or vacuum the floor to remove loose debris and dirt. Scrub the floor with warm, soapy water or a concrete cleaner and a stiff scrub brush. Rinse the floor thoroughly with a mop and clean water and allow it to dry completely.

    • 2

Stir the can of concrete sealer with a paint stirrer. Avoid shaking or swirling around the can to mix the sealer as this can cause air bubbles to form.

    • 3

Pour the sealer into a paint tray with a liner. Dip a paint brush into the sealer and brush it along the edge of the tray to remove the excess. Brush a thin coat of the sealer onto the floor all along the trim of the room. Get more sealer on the brush when necessary.

    • 4

Dip a medium-nap paint roller into the tray of sealer. Roll the paint roller on the end of the tray to get rid of excess sealer. Avoid letting the sealer puddle in any spots.

    • 5

Roll the sealer onto the floor in a thin, even layer. Start at the back of the room and work your way towards the door.

    • 6

Allow the sealer to dry completely according to the manufacturer's instructions. Apply a second coat of sealer once the first is dry.
