How to Remove a Bad Square of VCT

Vinyl composition tile, or VCT, is also known as resilient flooring. Schools and hospitals with high-traffic areas use this sturdy flooring product for a long-lasting finish instead of ceramic tile, which breaks and chips more easily. It is necessary to clean the subfloor correctly when laying VCT tile, or a tile may eventually break if there is debris underneath. Broken tiles should be replaced quickly to protect subfloors from damage, as water can penetrate underneath a broken tile. Proper removal techniques protect the surrounding tiles so you do not damage them.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug a blow dryer into an electrical receptacle and turn it on high heat. Direct the hot air onto the damaged square of VCT. Heat the VCT square for about five minutes.

    • 2

Place strips of painter's tape on the four tiles surrounding the damaged tile where they join to the bad tile.

    • 3

Place a chisel on the bad tile and strike it with a hammer with medium to heavy force to break the tile into small pieces. Lift any loose tile pieces out of the area. To remove any stuck pieces of tile, lay the chisel at a 45-degree angle and strike the hammer to loosen them from the flooring glue. Remove the old flooring glue in the same manner by scraping it off with the chisel at a 45-degree angle.

    • 4

Dip the tip of a slotted trowel into flooring glue. Spread the glue in the tile space on the floor. Wait the recommended time on the container of glue for it to become tacky.

    • 5

Press a new tile of VCT into the glue, aligning it with the surrounding tiles so it is square.

    • 6

Roll a 100-lb. flooring roller over the new tile. Place the center roller over the new tile and push the roller back and forth horizontally. Turn the roller and place the center over the new tile and roll it back and forth vertically across the tile. Roll the tile about 10 pushes in each direction.

    • 7

Remove the painter's tape from the surrounding tiles.
