How to Get Indents Out of a Carpet

Heavy furniture left in one place on a carpet for a long time can leave behind seemingly permanent indentations. Several restoration methods can reduce or eliminate the marks, making it possible to rearrange the room without worry. While any method can be used on any type of carpeting, each works most effectively on a particular style or material. Be prepared to persevere; in serious cases the backing of the carpet may be indented as well as the pile, and it can take time to bounce back.

Instructions

  1. Plush Pile Carpet

    • 1

Fill a spray bottle with water and spray over the indents.

    • 2

Turn a blow-dryer on to the hottest setting. Blow air directly over the indents to help the carpet bounce back.

    • 3

Work the carpet fibers gently back into place with your fingertips or a comb.

    Flat Pile Carpet

    • 4

Apply a dry carpet cleaner to the indent.

    • 5

Brush toward the center of the indent with a cat or dog brush.

    • 6

Vacuum over the area. Repeat the process until the pile lifts back into place.

    Nylon Carpet

    • 7

Dampen a clean cloth and place it over the indent.

    • 8

Turn a steam iron to the medium heat setting and hold it a few inches above the cloth for up to one minute.

    • 9

Brush the fibers with your fingers, a coin or a fork.

    Wool Carpet

    • 10

Place an ice cube in each indentation and leave them to melt.

    • 11

Wait 12 hours, then blot any remaining wet patches with a kitchen towel. Leave the carpet to dry.

    • 12

Vacuum over the area. Work the carpet fibers gently with your fingertips to fluff the pile.
