How to Seal Brick Flooring

A brick surface is a unique way to enliven the indoor space of just about any room. Though the brick will look great, it can be a pain to clean and maintain if it has not been sealed. With wear, the bricks will form a layer of grit and the mortar between the joints can weaken. With an acrylic sealant, however, you can protect the brick and mortar from wear and make cleaning up the surface a breeze. Even those unfamiliar with the sealing process can complete the project in a day.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all objects from the floor and then sweep the brick with a broom to remove surface debris and dirt.

    • 2

Fill a plastic bucket with a mixture of warm, soapy water. Attend to stains on the floor with the soapy mixture and a nylon-bristled brush. Rinse the soap from the floor with water to complete the preparation of the brick.

    • 3

Wait for the brick to dry completely before continuing.

    • 4

Fill a paint tray with an acrylic-based brick and mortar sealant.

    • 5

Run a paint roller through the sealant so that it is covered evenly and then run it over the brick floor starting in one corner of the room. Apply the sealant evenly in long, parallel strips. Overlap each strip slightly to ensure complete coverage.

    • 6

Wait for the sealant to dry for 48 hours before resuming use of the space.
