How to Patch Stained Carpet

If you aren't able to catch a stain right after it has developed, it might become a permanent part of your carpet. In this case, patch the carpet to hide the stain. Use patch material from a piece of leftover carpeting. The carpet patch might look different from the carpet if your carpet is very worn or sun bleached. Use a cookie cutter to make the repair. The cookie cutter is a carpet patch tool that has very sharp edge that will cut an identical piece of carpet out of your stained carpet and from your excess carpet patch. Purchase it at a hardware or home improvement store.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the cookie cutter stained carpet to remove the stained area. Rub the circular cutter clockwise and then counterclockwise to cut through the stained carpet and the carpet pad.

    • 2

Remove the carpet and carpet pad by prying it up with a screwdriver.

    • 3

Cut a patch from the piece of identical patch carpet. Use the same cookie cutter to get a perfect fit. Cut from the back of the carpet and don't cut through the carpet nap, as you want to preserve as much of it as possible.

    • 4

Use the same process to cut a patch from the same carpet padding.

    • 5

Place the carpet pad into the hole on the carpet and smooth it out so that its edges are below the carpet's edges.

    • 6

Raise the carpet and lay a piece of seam tape over the carpet pad. Press it so that the new piece of carpet pad will stick to the carpet pad around it. It should not attach the carpet pad to the carpet.

    • 7

Determine the direction of the carpet by running your hand over the carpet. Notice how the carpet changes appearance when you run your hand over it. Do the same with your piece of replacement carpet to determine how to orient the patch in the carpet.

    • 8

Press the patch into the carpet and rotate the patch until it blends perfectly with the rest of the carpet. Remove the patch and remember exactly how you placed it.

    • 9

Apply carpet glue to the tape that you placed on top of the carpet pad.

    • 10

Press the carpet patch over the glue and orient it so that it fits perfectly with the rest of the carpet.

    • 11

Roll a tractor over the edges of the patch to push the glue into the carpet backing and to blend the edges of the patch with the rest of the carpet.

    • 12

Let the carpet sit for several hours to dry completely.
