How to Even Out Stucco Steps

Over time stucco steps can wear in certain parts more than others, causing the steps to become uneven. Unfortunately, uneven stucco steps are not only visually unappealing but can also be dangerous to use. When the steps become uneven, they form low areas that can cause the person climbing the steps to lose his balance. Fortunately, if you follow the right procedures and use the proper supplies you can even out your steps and make them safe to use.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush the stucco steps, with the wire brush to remove all loose pieces of stucco.

    • 2

Vacuum the dust and debris off the steps with the vacuum cleaner.

    • 3

Place the level horizontal on the middle of the highest step. Look for low areas on the step. The low areas will usually be in the middle of the step, where most people walk. The low areas of the step can be identified by the gap they leave between the level and the step.

    • 4

Use the putty knife to remove the floor patch and smoothing compound from the bucket and place it on the low areas of the step.

    • 5

Spread the compound around with the trowel to fill in the low area. Place the level on the step again and check to see if the gap has been closed.

    • 6

Keep adding more compound until the low area is level and the gap between the level and the floor is no longer visible. If the layer of compound, is thicker than 1/4 inch, wait three hours before applying another layer.

    • 7

Level the remaining steps. Place the level on the remaining steps and identify the low areas. Fill in the low areas with the floor patch and smoothing compound. Let the compound dry for three hours before allowing foot traffic on the steps.
